Dog: A Carnivore

The teeth of a carnivore must be adopted for eating meat. The canines are strong, curved and pinpointed. They are used to seize and kill the prey, as well as , to tear of the flesh. The molars and premolars have sharp edges. The largest ones are called carnassial teeth. The jaws can only move up and down and as they do so, the shearing action chops the food into small pieces.

Carnivores do not keep food in their mouth for long. Their teeth do not wear down Much. The pulp cavities of the teeth are small and teeth do not grow continuously. The alimentary canal is quiet short, as the food has high protein content and is easily digested.
