Feeding Mechanisms and Types of Digestion

 • Animals have various ways of obtaining and ingesting food: Amoeba and paramecium use pseudopodia and cilia respectively to obtain food which take in as food vacuoles; Hydra uses it tentacles to catch food which it first partially digests in its gut and then completes digesting in it digestive cells; some animals filter feed (whales, flamingoes, mosquitoes); some animals are fluid feeders (hummingbird, butterflies); and insects are widely diversified in their diets and their mouthparts are specially adapted to suit each type of diet.

 • In Extracellular digestion, food is digested outside the body. In intracellular digestion, food is digested with in the body cells.
